Does refinishing work?

Yes, if the work is done properly it will last as long as 20 years. Be aware, this an alternative to costly replacement, which could cost as much as 6000 dollars. There is no surface which will last forever, not even porcelain.

bathtub rust repair

Is their rust around your bathtub drain or overflow?

Rust almost always indicates there is a leak. The back of steel or cast iron tubs are not coated with porcelain. Water leaks through the gaskets(because in time the rubber on the backside of the bathtub hardens or deteriorates), and accumulates on the metal and the bathtub starts to rust from the backside. Without replacing the gasket or eliminating and repairing the rust for about $99.00. The tub could rust through and cost anywhere from $2500.00 to $6000.00 to replace.

How to Refinish Bathroom Fixtures
By
 Horn's Refinishing
Over time, your bathroom fixtures will suffer from normal wear and tear. They may begin to look old and damaged and you may have even considered throwing them out in the trash. However, if your like the rest of us and looking for ways to cut cost you may want to consider refinishing them.

What You'll Need:

    Masking paper
    Blue painter's tape
    80-grit sandpaper
    Mineral spirits
    Rags
    Tinted spray etching primer
    Oil-based plum brown spray paint
    Screwdriver
    Fabric drop cloth

Start with refinishing your faucets first. Ensure that you protect the counter-tops and sink by using masking paper to cover them up. Make sure that you tape the edges down to further secure the paper. You can use painter's tape to do so.
You'll also want to protect a 4-foot by 4-foot area of the wall behind the sink using the same process in the previous step.
Using 80-grit sandpaper, clean the area of any corrosion that may be found on the faucet.
Take a rag and dampen it with mineral spirits to wipe down the entire faucet. Ensure that you cover every part of the faucet that you plan to refinish.
Apply one thin coat of etching primer to the faucet. To complete this step spray in short and intermittent spurts. Spraying in a long and steady stream will more than likely lead to runs and drips. So its important that you follow this step for the most professional looking final outcome.
Allow the etching primer to cure for at least four hours. However, ensure that you turn the faucet handles every 20 minutes to prevent sticking.
Using short and intermittent spurts, spray the entire faucet with primer. The paint will need to dry for at least two hours before moving to the next stop. Just as above, you'll also want to turn the handles every 20 minutes to prevent sticking. Continue applying coats until you achieve your desired finish
